Thirteen

“This is madness!” Evan exclaimed. “I can’t mobilize a full Interpol team by tomorrow night.”

We were back at our cottage with Rupert, Sloane, and Peaches but the conversation hadn’t budged far past that same topic: how we would both capture Noel and locate Sigrid’s grave on the same night? Moran demanded that I go timewalking for him as soon as we delivered Noel into custody—that was the deal. Evan had been on the phone for the past twenty minutes with Interpol, breaking only long enough to fill us in.

“Phoebe, perhaps it would be more prudent if you remain away from the castle until after we catch Noel?” Rupert suggested.

“How can that work when I’m the bait?” I countered. “Moran has told Noel that he’s using me to find a Viking grave, which is why that bastard has agreed to come to the castle in the first place. Noel thinks he’s going to kidnap me and probably knows that we’re likewise setting a trap for him—he’s learned to expect that much from us. It’s like a game to him now. Actually, who knows what Noel thinks? He obviously hasn’t been reasoning too clearly for years. Nothing else matters to him where I’m concerned. He’ll come for me at any cost.”

“Because he’s insane,” Evan stated. “And he wants to get you as much as you do him.”

“When will that bastard finally leave you alone?” said Peaches.

“When he’s dead,” said my husband and I at more or less at the same time, he being at the far end of what was usually a very long rope. “I don’t want you go tomorrow night, Phoebe.”

Turning, I faced him. An air of confrontation was forming between us—not something we were used to in our marriage. It’s not that we didn’t argue but we had always been able to either talk or love our way out of disagreements. Not this time. This time, I was forging ahead with something he flatly did not want me to do, and I mean that in the most absolute sense. The fact that he had no way to stop me didn’t make it easier on the poor man. This wasn’t a new situation between us, but the stakes were so much higher now.

“I must, Evan,” I told him again. How many times had I said something similar? “You know I do. I have to put an end to Noel once and for all, and this looks like the perfect opportunity. The castle is a relatively contained area and Moran has given us full license to put in place whatever is needed to bring him down, including extra police if they arrive in time.”

Moran’s enthusiasm—passion, even—for locating Sigrid’s grave had prompted him to be extraordinarily cooperative. He’d do anything to find that grave, apparently. “We may even get to access Moran’s secret rooms while we’re at it. How can we turn down an opportunity like that?”

“And you do realize that finding Sigrid’s grave brings you to the point where she died,
